What is secondary service connection?

Transcript:

So, sometimes we get questions from veterans. Let’s say that they’ve been service connected for um some disabilities for quite some time and now they’ve developed secondary conditions. Those service connected conditions have caused some additional disabilities. You can actually be compensated for these secondary service connected conditions, but there’s a few special rules that apply to those. A secondary service connection is when a new disability develops because of a condition that is

already service connected or when a condition that is not related to that service connected condition is aggravated by that service connected condition. So either way either cause or aggravate. Now to be successful in a claim for secondary service connection you’re going to have to show three elements. Number one you need a current diagnosis of that secondary condition. This can’t be something that’s already resolved. It can’t be something that you think might develop in the future. It

needs to be a current diagnosis. Second, you need an existing service connected disability. Makes sense, right? If it’s going to be secondary, the primary one has to be service connected. And the third element, you need medical evidence that the secondary condition is caused or worsened by the primary one. And usually that’s going to require a nexus letter from a private doctor, your treating physician, or a VA medical opinion um looking at whether that secondary condition is related to that

primary service connected condition. Again, if you think you’ve been denied um improperly for a secondary uh service connected condition, feel free to reach out. We’ll be happy to take a look and see if we can help you with
